(Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House)』が１月の第１週に１９万２千部の売上を記録しました。
“Becoming,” the memoir of the former first lady Michelle Obama has been sweeping the world. After its release in November, it quickly became a publishing phenomenon, and now it seems as though the fever went across the ocean to the UK. According to the Guardian, the book sold over 92,000 copies prior to Christmas and became the bestseller of the holiday season. The US has seen a series of political-themed nonfiction in the past few years, perhaps fueled by the detest for the current president, Donald Trump, and his administration. Obama’s memoir seems to be very much welcomed by the citizens and residents of the UK.
In the past year, especially, there were bestsellers that revolved around the Trump administration. According to CNBC News, “Fear” by Bob Woodward sold over 900,000 copies on its first day of sale. Former FBI director James Comey’s “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership” topped 600,000 copies on its first day in April. Michael Wolf’s "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” over 192,000 copies on the first day of its sale in January. These so-called Trump tell-all’s draw attention from Japanese readers, and all of them are set to be translated into Japanese very soon. Wolf’s book has also become a bestseller on Amazon Japan. “Becoming,” however, seems to tower over all of them.
In this memoir, Obama candidly touches upon her childhood to becoming the FLOTUS, a miscarriage and the infertility treatments before becoming a proud mother of two beautiful daughters, her reservation about her husband entering the political carrier. She humorously mentions her bonding with Queen Elizabeth over high heels and sore feet. According to the Guardian, it is the first book by a female author in a decade to top Britain’s Christmas bestseller list, after J. K. Rowling with “Harry Potter” series in 2008.
The official website for “Becoming” notes that the book is to be translated into 32 languages. Shueisha has secured the Japanese rights, though the publication date is still unknown. Obama is currently on her book tour, adding events outside of the US from February to April in countries such as Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the UK, France, and the Netherland. Japanese social media also shows high hopes to welcome Obama to their nation in the near future.
